In many Earth based traditions, each river is alive and has a spirit. Some are considered supernatural, like nymphs who preside over fountains, wells, springs, streams, and brooks. Others appear in human form. And some are simply felt.

Rivers are a place that humans have gone since time immemorial, to wash, to swim, to rest. Rivers are the life blood of whole communities. To me, the spirit of the water feels like a life force, dancing with the salmon, reaching to the animals who drink from her edges, gently yet fiercely carving it’s way along the Earth, nourishing life.

This piece is an expression of the River Spirit I feel at this particular place, a special river that I visit each year to become quiet and to listen.
